The setup, a rig Guilmette uses to go "skyfishing," requires mostly inexpensive parts—stuff, he says, you can find at any WalMart. The Great Urban Hack is the product of Hacks and Hackers, an organization formed in NYC by Jenny 8 Lee, Chrys Wu and Al Shaw. The group is for "hackers exploring technologies to filter and visualize information, and for journalists who use technology to find and tell stories."

Hacking Subways
Imagine the dark windows of subway cars lit with L.E.D's of beautiful imagery. Powered by the trains these displays will animate for passengers as the train travels and slow to a halt when the train stops. Minah Kim and Yeonju Shaw got the idea from an app they were thinking of creating for one of their daughters. The idea is a child could blow into the phone and animate a pinwheel, as example, on the screen. Imagine 100's of pinwheels hustling through the dark underground of NYC. Accelerometers have never gone this fast. In the afternoon Jules from MTA showed up and as I write is engaged in a pitch on the idea.

These two stunning videos show use what daily home life might be like in the not-too-distant future. Whether their visionary outlooks are utopian or dystopian, however, is for your to decide.

The second video is perhaps a bit more positive in its outlook, suggesting creative menus that could surround us while we work … it might still look like an information overload scenario, but so would the web had someone showed it to us a few decades ago.

Frame Seductions explores the concept of looking outside of the video frame by tracking the head movements of people in front of the screen. Only a static but very seducing image can be seen from the distance but as visitors come nearer and turn their head to the left or to the right the perspective of the video on the screen automatically follows their gaze, enabling them to access material that would otherwise be outside of the filming frame. Viewers can this discover quirky scenarios lurking in the sidelines: characters appear in several places at once, exit through doors to reappear elsewhere and sometimes give the viewer or each other quizzical looks.
